About this land node

Vera Ruth's Family Household Epicenter is a smallholder homestead in Burora Sub-County of Kagadi District, within Uganda's mid-western Bunyoro region. What was once a bare compound with no planting has been transformed into a productive irrigated vegetable garden generating approximately 1 million Ugandan shillings per year from a small piece of land alone. Guided by an African Rural University graduate serving as URDT Epicenter Manager, Vera Ruth adopted improved farming methods including mulching for soil moisture retention and aeration, proper spacing, organic manure application, and hand-pump irrigation from an on-site well. The garden produces onions, cabbages, spinach, African spinach (nakati), carrots, tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers. Beyond vegetables, the homestead cultivates cassava, coffee, cocoa, and candlenut trees. A micro-flush vermicompost toilet uses earthworms to decompose fecal matter into organic fertilizer, which is then applied to the gardens in a closed-loop circular economy. Organic manure is also produced on-site using locally available resources taught by the Epicenter Manager. The family is constructing an envisioned permanent house, currently at approximately 14 million UGX invested toward a target of 30 million UGX for completion. Vera Ruth is also a member of the Burora Women Leadership Circle, a collective that innovates candlenut oil extraction from locally grown candlenut trees (Aleurites moluccanus), pounding seeds by hand and fermenting the paste for 21 days before pressing to extract oil.

Project Vision
We envision our homestead as a thriving regenerative demonstration site where the vegetable garden expands its production beyond 1 million UGX per year, where our permanent house stands completed and occupied, where the micro-flush vermicompost toilet serves as a model of circular sanitation for the sub-county, and where our cocoa, coffee, and candlenut trees mature into reliable long-term income sources. Within twenty years, we see Burora Sub-County transformed by households practising irrigated organic vegetable production, vermicompost sanitation, and women-led candlenut oil enterprise, proving that knowledge from African Rural University graduates working as Epicenter Managers can turn bare compounds into abundant gardens and empty latrines into fertile soil.

To demonstrate that a rural household, guided by an African Rural University graduate Epicenter Manager, can transform a barren compound into a productive regenerative farm generating meaningful income from vegetables alone, close the nutrient loop through vermicompost toilets and organic manure production, irrigate year-round from an on-site well, and participate in women-led value-addition enterprises such as candlenut oil extraction within the Burora Women Leadership Circle

The homestead supports an intensively cultivated garden with onions (Allium cepa), cabbages (Brassica oleracea), spinach, African spinach or nakati (Solanum aethiopicum), carrots (Daucus carota), tomatoes, eggplants (Solanum melongena), and peppers. Perennial crops include cassava, Coffea robusta, Theobroma cacao, and candlenut trees (Aleurites moluccanus) whose seeds are harvested for oil extraction by the Burora Women Leadership Circle. Remnant gallery forests along nearby wetlands harbour fig trees (Ficus spp.), Markhamia lutea, and Albizia spp. Earthworms (Eisenia fetida and local species) serve as the biological engine of the micro-flush vermicompost toilet, converting fecal matter into garden-ready soil. The Banyoro people have inhabited this plateau for centuries, cultivating bananas, millet, yams, and coffee under the stewardship of the Omukama and the clan system. The women of Burora Sub-County carry forward generations of Banyoro agricultural knowledge and communal labour traditions through the Burora Women Leadership Circle and their partnership with URDT.
