About this land node
Tijhaar Community School Nkondo is a secondary school located in Nkondo Town, Kakumiro District, in the Bunyoro sub-region of western Uganda. Originally established in 2003 by a committed community member who wanted local children to access education, the school closed in 2005 after the founder passed away and the community could not sustain it financially. In 2006, inspired by the determination of students who had remained teaching each other, URDT agreed to transform it into a community school using the two-generation approach to education and development. The school educates approximately 130 students annually from Senior 1 to Senior 4 (O-level), providing both the national academic curriculum and change-agent training. The campus sits on the central plateau of the former Greater Kibaale area at approximately 1,330 metres elevation, surrounded by smallholder farms growing matooke, cassava, beans, maize, and coffee. The school participates in the Pupil Managed School Farm Project, where students manage a demonstration farm growing nutritious and cash crops while learning sustainable agriculture, bookkeeping, and marketing skills.

- We envision Nkondo as a thriving community where every young person has access to education that transforms not only their own future but the well-being of their entire home. Over the next twenty years, we see the two-generation approach spreading from our school to homes and communities across Kakumiro District, creating a critical mass of responsible, entrepreneurial citizens who build prosperity through sustainable agriculture, cooperation, and shared vision. We see our school farm as a model that inspires hundreds of families to adopt sustainable practices that restore soil health, improve nutrition, and generate income.

- The surrounding landscape supports mixed cultivation of matooke (cooking banana), cassava, sweet potato, beans, maize, groundnuts, coffee, and various fruit trees. Indigenous tree species in remnant patches include Maesopsis eminii (musizi), Ficus species, Albizia species, and Markhamia lutea. Wetland vegetation includes papyrus (Cyperus papyrus), Miscanthus, and various sedges. Wildlife in the broader landscape includes vervet monkeys, olive baboons, various duiker species, monitor lizards, and diverse birdlife. The Nkusi River supports catfish species including Clarias werneri and various Enteromius species. Butterflies, dragonflies, and pollinators are abundant in the mosaic landscape.
