About this land node
URDT Girls School is an all-girls primary and secondary boarding school situated on the URDT campus in Kagadi Town Council, Kagadi District, in the Bunyoro sub-region of western Uganda. Founded in 2000, the school educates approximately 318 girls from upper primary (P5) through advanced secondary level (S6) using a distinctive two-generation approach that educates both the girl and her home simultaneously. The campus sits within the rolling ferrallitic landscapes of the central plateau at roughly 1,200 metres elevation, surrounded by smallholder farms growing matooke, cassava, beans, and coffee. The school integrates the national academic curriculum with change-agent training, back-home projects, popular theatre, and community radio programming through KKCR 91.7 FM. Students develop shared visions with their parents, learn eco-mindful farming, health and sanitation practices, and climate-smart technologies. The school feeds directly into URDT Institute for vocational training and African Rural University for degree-level rural transformation leadership.

- We envision a thriving Bunyoro where every girl who passes through our school becomes a catalyst for transformation in her home and community. Over the next twenty years, we see thousands of families lifted from poverty through the two-generation approach, with graduates serving as rural transformation leaders across western Uganda and beyond. We see a landscape where sustainable agriculture, protected wetlands, and restored forest corridors support both human prosperity and ecological health, guided by the shared visions of empowered women and their communities.

- The surrounding landscape supports a mosaic of cultivated crops (matooke, cassava, sweet potato, beans, groundnuts, coffee, cocoa, tobacco, cotton), fallow bush, and remnant forest patches. Indigenous tree species include Maesopsis eminii (musizi), Ficus species, Albizia species, and scattered Milicia excelsa (mvule). Wetland vegetation includes papyrus (Cyperus papyrus), Miscanthus, and various sedges. Wildlife in the broader landscape includes vervet monkeys, olive baboons, various duiker species, monitor lizards, and diverse birdlife. The Muzizi River supports fish species including Hippopotamyrus grahami, Amphilius jacksonii, Enteromius perince, Synodontis schall, and Enteromius kerstenii. Chimpanzees and red-tailed monkeys inhabit the nearby Ruzaire Central Forest Reserve and other remnant forest patches.

- Kagadi District sits at the ecological crossroads between the Victoria Basin forest-savanna mosaic and the Albertine Rift biodiversity hotspot. The Albertine Rift is one of the most species-rich regions in Africa, and the district serves as a transition zone between the dense forests of Kibale National Park to the south and the savannas approaching Lake Albert. Deforestation for agriculture has reduced forest cover significantly, but wetland corridors, central forest reserves, and remnant forest patches maintain critical ecological connectivity. The district's wetland systems are especially important for freshwater biodiversity and as breeding habitat for migratory and resident bird species.

- The Muzizi River corridor connects the forested highlands around Mubende and Kibale National Park to the Lake Albert basin, serving as a critical movement pathway for aquatic species and riparian wildlife. The Nkusi River system provides a parallel corridor. Remnant central forest reserves, including Ruzaire, serve as stepping-stone habitats for primates and forest birds between Kibale National Park and the Albertine Rift forests. Wetland systems covering 12.6 percent of the district provide continuous habitat corridors for wetland-dependent species.

The district is bounded by Lake Albert and the Albertine Rift to the west, with the Muzizi River system forming a natural boundary to the south and the Nkusi River drainage defining the eastern watershed. Tertiary wetland systems and papyrus-lined seasonal streams cross the surrounding landscape, connecting to the primary Muzizi and Nkusi riverine wetlands that ultimately drain into Lake Albert.

- The campus exists within a transitional landscape between the Victoria Basin forest-savanna mosaic and the Albertine Rift forests ecoregion. This area was historically covered by moist semi-deciduous tropical forest but has been substantially converted to agricultural land over the past century. Remnant forest patches, wetland corridors along the Muzizi and Nkusi rivers, and scattered central forest reserves such as Ruzaire maintain ecological connectivity between Kibale National Park to the south and the Lake Albert basin to the northwest. The surrounding smallholder farming landscape creates a matrix of cultivated plots, fallow bush, and wetland margins that supports a mosaic of agricultural and wild biodiversity.

- Tropical wet-and-dry climate (Aw) with bi-modal rainfall pattern. The area experiences two distinct wet seasons and two dry seasons annually, moderated by the relatively high elevation of the central plateau at 600-1,200 metres above sea level.
- Rainfall patterns
- Bi-modal rainfall with two peaks: the first wet season runs from March to May (long rains) and the second from September to December (short rains). Dry spells typically occur from January to February and from June to August. The western portion of the district, closer to the Albertine Rift and Lake Albert, tends to receive somewhat lower rainfall than the eastern highlands.

- Temperature Extremes
- Maximum temperatures reach 30-32 degrees Celsius during the dry months of January-February, while minimum temperatures drop to 15-17 degrees Celsius during cooler nights in the elevated areas. The Lake Albert rift valley floor in the western portion of the district experiences higher extremes.

- Watershed
- Within the Lake Albert drainage basin. The campus lies between the Muzizi and Nkusi river systems, both of which flow northwestward to empty into Lake Albert. The Muzizi River originates near Mubende and traverses several districts before entering Lake Albert at Ndaiga in Kagadi District. The Nkusi River begins near Kakumiro and also empties into Lake Albert. Secondary wetlands including the Mpamba and Mutunguru river systems drain into these primary watercourses.
- Aquifers & groundwater
- Groundwater resources are accessed through boreholes and protected springs across the district. The ferrallitic soils overlying weathered basement rock create variable aquifer conditions. Shallow aquifers in valley bottoms and near wetland margins provide relatively accessible water, while deeper boreholes are required on the interfluves. Spring protection is a key community water source throughout the Bunyoro sub-region.

- Lake Albert lies approximately 60 kilometres to the west-northwest. The Muzizi River passes through the district, with its mouth at Ndaiga on Lake Albert. The Nkusi River drainage system lies to the east. Multiple tertiary wetland systems and seasonal streams cross the surrounding landscape. Wetlands cover approximately 12.6 percent of the total district area and are an important source of craft materials, mudfish, clay, and sand for local communities.

- Elevation & slope
- The campus sits at approximately 1,200 metres above sea level on the central plateau. Kagadi District ranges from 620 metres (2,040 feet) at the Lake Albert rift floor to approximately 1,220 metres (4,000 feet) on the plateau. The terrain is hilly and rolling, with the Rift Valley escarpment forming dramatic elevation changes in the western portion of the district near Ndaiga Sub County.
- Landforms
- Rolling hills and valleys of the central plateau, dissected by rivers and wetland systems flowing toward the Albertine Rift. The plateau surface is characterized by broad interfluves separated by shallow valleys containing wetlands and seasonal streams. To the west, the landscape drops dramatically into the Lake Albert rift valley. Rocky outcrops and laterite exposures occur on steeper hillsides.
- Soil Types
- The district contains three main soil mapping units. Buyaga Catena shallow loams are moderately acidic with moderate productivity, found in Mabaale, Pachwa, and Kiryanga sub-counties. Red clay loams are deeper and more fertile, supporting diverse crop production. Brown gravelly clay loams are found in areas with steeper terrain. All soils are ferrallitic in origin, with productivity dependent on favourable rainfall, adequate depth, and maintenance of the humic topsoil. Loss of soil fertility through leaching is evident in areas where forest has been cleared for agriculture.
- Soil health
- Soil health varies considerably across the landscape. Areas under continuous cultivation without fallowing or composting show declining fertility from leaching and erosion. The URDT campus and school farm practise composting, mulching, and companion planting to maintain soil organic matter. Clay-rich deep loam soils in the Buyaga east area remain sufficiently fertile to support diverse cropping. The absence of clay soils in some areas makes construction challenging and increases reliance on transported building materials.
- Erosion risk
- Moderate to high erosion risk, particularly on deforested hillsides with steep slopes. The hilly terrain combined with high-intensity rainfall during the two wet seasons drives sheet and gully erosion where vegetation cover has been removed. Loss of forest cover for agricultural expansion has accelerated soil erosion throughout the district. Road construction and maintenance on the hilly, rocky terrain presents particular challenges.

- Land Acknowledgements
- This land lies within the ancestral territory of the Banyoro people and the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom, one of the oldest kingdoms in the African Great Lakes region. The Omukama of Bunyoro-Kitara has historically governed these lands, and the cultural heritage of the kingdom remains deeply woven into community life. URDT acknowledges this heritage and works in partnership with the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom, as recognised in public statements of gratitude by ARU Vice Chancellor Dr. Mwalimu Musheshe.
- Traditional ecological knowledge
- Banyoro traditional knowledge systems include sophisticated understanding of seasonal planting calendars, soil fertility management through bush fallowing, the medicinal properties of indigenous plants, and wetland resource management. Traditional practices of intercropping matooke with beans, groundnuts, and coffee reflect generations of knowledge about companion planting and nutrient cycling. The Banyoro have long recognised the Muzizi and Nkusi river systems as critical water sources and fishing grounds, managing mudfish harvesting in tertiary wetlands through customary norms. URDT's educational model explicitly draws on this indigenous wisdom, merging it with modern scientific approaches.
- Human Cultures
- Kagadi District lies within the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom, one of the oldest and most historically significant kingdoms in the East African Great Lakes region. The predominant ethnic group is the Banyoro people, who speak Runyoro. The area also hosts Bakiga settlers who migrated from southwestern Uganda, along with Batooro and smaller communities. The Omukama (king) of Bunyoro-Kitara holds cultural authority, and traditional governance structures coexist with modern district administration. URDT Girls School draws students from across the district, bridging tribal, religious, and cultural differences through shared vision and values. KKCR 91.7 FM broadcasts in seven languages including Runyoro and Rukiga, reflecting the cultural diversity of the listenership.
- Cultural landscapes
- The Bunyoro cultural landscape is characterised by scattered homesteads (emyaro) surrounded by mixed gardens of matooke, cassava, beans, and fruit trees, connected by footpaths and bordered by wetland valleys. The URDT campus itself represents a contemporary cultural landscape with its traditional thatched-roof rondavels alongside modern classroom blocks, a library, demonstration farms, and community gathering spaces. The landscape also bears the marks of historical displacement and resettlement, as Bunyoro lost significant territory during colonial reorganisation.
- Recent land history
- Kagadi District was carved from the former Greater Kibaale District. The area has experienced significant land-use change over the past several decades, with substantial deforestation for agriculture and settlement. In-migration of Bakiga farmers from southwestern Uganda has transformed large areas of former forest into cultivated land. The discovery of oil and gas resources in the Albertine Graben has brought new pressures and opportunities to the broader region. URDT established its campus in Kagadi and has progressively developed the school infrastructure, including recently constructing a new multipurpose hall and expanding dormitory facilities.
