About this land node
The Bosco Family Household Epicenter is a 15-acre smallholder homestead in Katatahwa Village, located in Saare Sub-County of Kagadi District in Uganda's mid-western Bunyoro region. The family of Mr. John Bosco Asiimwe and Mrs. Asiimwe Grace cultivates sugarcane as their primary cash crop, alongside coffee on five acres, cocoa, avocados, bananas, yams, peppers, and maize across a mixed agroforestry landscape. Three functioning fish ponds provide protein and supplemental income, while a small-scale sugarcane distillery produces waragi, a traditional local spirit, adding value to the harvest on-site. Since 2023 the family has worked closely with URDT Epicenter Manager Oliver, an African Rural University graduate, who facilitates visionary planning, financial accountability, and ecosystem-friendly tree planting across the homestead and surrounding community. The property sits on undulating terrain within the Victoria Basin forest-savanna mosaic at roughly 1,200 metres elevation, surrounded by red clay loam soils fed by bi-modal rains averaging 1,000 to 1,500 mm per year, in a landscape drained by the Muzizi and Nkusi river systems flowing westward into Lake Albert.

- We envision our homestead as a thriving, self-sustaining family enterprise where every child holds a university degree, where coffee, cocoa, and fish generate reliable quarterly income, where our fish ponds are stocked to full capacity, and where our permanent house stands completed as a testament to what visionary planning and disciplined accountability can achieve. Within twenty years, we see Katatahwa Village as a model community where every household has drawn its own family vision, where ecosystem-friendly trees have replaced eucalyptus across the landscape, and where the Epicenter Strategy has awakened the sleeping genius in each of us, spiralling outward from our home to inspire neighbouring villages, the sub-county, the district, and beyond.

- The surrounding landscape supports a mosaic of cultivated and semi-natural vegetation typical of the Victoria Basin forest-savanna transition. Cultivated species on the homestead include Coffea robusta, Theobroma cacao, Saccharum officinarum (sugarcane), Musa spp. (matooke bananas), Dioscorea spp. (yams), Capsicum spp. (peppers), Zea mays (maize), and Persea americana (avocado). Ecosystem-friendly trees recently planted include Khaya anthotheca (African mahogany), Grevillea robusta, and Maesopsis eminii (musizi), replacing earlier eucalyptus plantings. Remnant gallery forests along wetlands harbour fig trees (Ficus spp.), Markhamia lutea, and Albizia spp. Birdlife includes Great Blue Turaco, African Grey Parrot, and various sunbirds, while mudfish thrive in the seasonal wetlands where community members practice rudimentary fishing.

The Banyoro people speak Runyoro, a Bantu language, and are led by the Omukama (king), currently Solomon Iguru I, the 27th Omukama. The community includes descendants of the Banyoro, Batooro, and migrant farming communities drawn to the fertile Buyaga soils.
