About this land node

The Charity Family Household Epicenter is a 4-acre smallholder homestead in Rugarama Village, located in the northern part of Kagadi District within Uganda's mid-western Bunyoro region. The family's transformation began in 2022 when Charity, then a Primary Five student, joined the URDT Girls School and participated in a one-week orientation workshop introducing the two-generation approach and the Visionary Approach. Through this process, Charity and her family drew a five-year vision that included building a permanent house with full sanitary facilities, establishing income-generating projects in coffee, cocoa, bananas, and poultry, and acquiring a motorcycle. Since then, the family has moved from a semi-permanent dwelling with no kitchen, drying rack, or sanitary facilities into a permanent house they now inhabit. Two acres are dedicated to improved banana plantation managed through agronomic practices learned via the school, including mulching, weeding, and pruning. The remaining acreage supports beans, groundnuts, oranges, coffee, cocoa, rabbits, poultry, and goats. The family collects non-biodegradable waste including plastic bottles for recycling into trash bins, demonstrating environmental stewardship alongside agricultural development.

Project Vision
We envision our homestead as a model home where community members come to learn and be inspired. Within five years, our permanent house stands completed with full sanitary facilities, our banana plantation thrives under proper agronomic management, our cocoa trees reach full production, and our children pursue higher education through the URDT pathway. Charity aspires to earn a bachelor's degree at the African Rural University and become an Epicenter Manager, carrying the two-generation approach to new communities. Within twenty years, we see Rugarama Village transformed by families who have drawn their own visions, built permanent homes, diversified their farms, and awakened the sleeping genius in each of us, proving that a girl's education can raise an entire village.
Project Purpose
To demonstrate that a single girl student, empowered by the URDT Girls School two-generation approach, can catalyse her entire family's transformation from subsistence farming into a diversified, vision-driven household that builds permanent infrastructure, practises improved banana agronomics, generates income from multiple crops and livestock, and becomes a model home where community members come to learn and be inspired

The surrounding landscape supports a mosaic of cultivated and semi-natural vegetation typical of the Victoria Basin forest-savanna transition. Cultivated species on the homestead include Musa spp. (matooke bananas, 2 acres), Coffea robusta, Theobroma cacao, Phaseolus vulgaris (beans), Arachis hypogaea (groundnuts), Citrus sinensis (oranges), and assorted vegetables. Remnant gallery forests along wetland corridors harbour fig trees (Ficus spp.), Markhamia lutea, Albizia spp., and Maesopsis eminii (musizi). Birdlife includes Great Blue Turaco, African Grey Parrot, various sunbirds, and weaverbirds. Mudfish thrive in the seasonal wetlands where community members practise rudimentary fishing.

Ficus spp. (strangler figs) serve as keystone fruit providers for birds and primates throughout the landscape. Maesopsis eminii (musizi) and Grevillea robusta provide canopy structure in the surrounding reforestation efforts. The Banyoro people have inhabited this plateau for centuries, cultivating bananas, millet, yams, and coffee under the stewardship of the Omukama and the clan system.
