About this land node
Mnyumbuni is a three-acre bioregional hub and living laboratory in the Takaungu Creek watershed of coastal Kilifi, Kenya. It serves as the headquarters of Grassroots Economics Foundation and operates as a community gathering place, demonstration farm, and coordination centre where regeneration is practiced, measured, discussed, and improved over time.
When the team moved onto the land in 2023, virtually nothing was growing due to degraded, nutrient-poor soils. Since then, a half-acre has been intensively developed with syntropic agroforestry beds, hugelkultur trenches dug two feet deep and filled with biomass and compost, and half-moon water-harvesting earthworks designed to slow runoff, sink rainfall, and prevent erosion across the sloped terrain.
The agroforestry system now includes cacao, coconuts, citrus, bananas, papayas, guavas, and seasonal vegetables, with a native species nursery supplying planting material to community groups.
The site integrates community economic coordination through the Sarafu Network, rooted in the Giriama tradition of Mwerya (rotational mutual labour). Three community groups — predominantly women, with one rare all-male group — visit weekly for shared labour days, learning techniques at Mnyumbuni and implementing them on their own homesteads.
Steward Emmanuel Kahindi, born in neighbouring Kiriba Village, leads hands-on training and coordinates group activities.
Mnyumbuni makes land stewardship measurable, shareable, and financeable without turning land or people into commodities.

- In twenty years, we see a landscape where rainwater mostly soaks into healthy soils instead of rushing away, and the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takaungu">Takaungu</a> Creek runs clearer because upstream land is well cared for. Indigenous trees and food forests form layered canopies across farms and homesteads, creating shade, habitat, and steady harvests. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mangrove">Mangroves</a> and creek-edge ecosystems are stronger, supported by upstream stewardship and clear local agreements. We see a community that knows how to organise itself through shared labour via <a href="https://willruddick.substack.com/p/from-ireland-meitheal-to-kenya-mweria">Mwerya</a> and trusted coordination tools on the <a href="https://sarafu.network/">Sarafu Network</a>. Young people grow up with practical ecological skills, cultural pride, and real livelihood pathways connected to their land. Steward Emmanuel Kahindi envisions Mnyumbuni becoming a centre where anyone can come to learn regenerative practices and carry that knowledge back to their own farms and communities — producing enough food for the team, the community groups, and surplus to sell beyond the village. The vision guiding us is simple: a place where ecology and community reinforce each other, and where care becomes the normal way of living.

The terrain is gently undulating with low hills and shallow valleys that channel seasonal runoff toward the creek. Slopes are generally mild (2-10%), with occasional steeper areas along drainage lines and the creek escarpment.

- Gently rolling coastal plain and low hills formed on coral limestone and coastal sediments, dissected by seasonal stream channels draining into Takaungu Creek. The landscape includes flat to gently undulating farmland, small ridges with remnant bush and tree cover, seasonal drainage depressions, and the incised creek valley with mangrove-lined estuary near the coast.

Erosion control through vegetative barriers, half-moon earthworks, and agroforestry canopy protects soil structure during heavy rains. Plans to introduce goats and cattle will add animal manure to the soil-building cycle and provide on-site milk production.
