About this land node
Rockland Farm Alliance's community farm on preserved land
Overview
- Project Title
- Cropsey Community Farm
- Ecoregional Location
- Northeast US Coastal Forests, Northeastern American Mixed Forests (NA10)
- Local Location
- Lower Hudson Valley
- Political Location
- New City, Rockland County, New York, United States
Ecology & biodiversity
- Biodiversity context
- Lower Hudson Valley farms and parks are habitat islands within suburbia, connected by reservoir lands, the Hudson shoreline and the Highlands; they are especially important for pollinators, grassland birds and migratory songbirds.
- Ecological corridors
- Croton watershed lands, the Hudson shoreline and the Highlands forests link remaining open space in Westchester and Rockland to the larger Hudson Highlands and Harriman corridor.
- Ecosystem unity
- The site lies in the Northeast US Coastal Forests ecoregion in the lower Hudson Valley, where remaining farms, reservoir lands and parks form green space within the suburban landscape north of New York City.
Climate & water
- Climate Zones
- Humid continental climate with hot summers (Köppen Dfa); low basins such as the Black Dirt are frost-prone.
- Rainfall patterns
- Precipitation is spread evenly through the year with no dry season; late summer and early autumn are slightly wetter, often boosted by thunderstorms and the remnants of tropical storms. Winter precipitation falls as snow, sleet and rain, and spring snowmelt drives peak streamflow in March and April.
- Average Rainfall
- Approximately 1,200 to 1,300 mm per year.
- Temperature Extremes
- July highs average near 29°C with heat waves above 32°C most summers. January lows average around -6°C, with cold snaps below -15°C.
- Average Temperature
- About 11°C annually, from roughly -2°C in January to 24°C in July.
- Watershed
- Within the Hudson River watershed in Westchester, largely in the Croton River system that feeds New York City's reservoirs, and in the Hackensack and Hudson drainages in Rockland.
Land & terrain
- Elevation & slope
- Gently rolling lowland and low hills, mostly between roughly 50 and 200 metres above sea level.
- Landforms
- Glacially scoured hills and valleys of crystalline bedrock, with reservoirs filling former river valleys and the Hudson gorge to the west.
- Soil Types
- Stony, well-drained loams formed in glacial till over gneiss and schist of the Manhattan Prong and Hudson Highlands, with wetter soils in valleys and reservoir margins.
- Renewable resource potential
- Solar on barn roofs and field margins; composting of manure and crop residue; soil carbon in pasture and cover-cropped fields.
People & history
- Land Acknowledgements
- Cropsey Community Farm lies within Lenapehoking, the homeland of the Lenape and Wappinger peoples whose Munsee-speaking communities lived along Muhheakantuck, the river that flows both ways. We acknowledge them and their descendants in the Delaware Nation, the Delaware Tribe of Indians and the Stockbridge-Munsee Community, whose relationship with this land continues.
