Overview
- Project Title
- Blooming Hill Farm
- Ecoregional Location
- Northeast US Coastal Forests, Northeastern American Mixed Forests (NA10)
- Local Location
- Mid-Hudson Valley
- Political Location
- Monroe / Blooming Grove, Orange County, New York, United States
Ecology & biodiversity
- Biodiversity context
- The Black Dirt wetlands, the Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge and the Hudson Highlands make Orange County regionally important for wetland, grassland and forest birds; organic and diversified farms add habitat within an intensively farmed and developing county.
- Ecological corridors
- The Wallkill River corridor links the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge in New Jersey to the Shawangunk Grasslands and Hudson Valley, and the Highlands ridges connect Harriman and Sterling Forest to Black Rock Forest.
- Ecosystem unity
- The site lies in the Northeast US Coastal Forests ecoregion in Orange County, between the Hudson Highlands, the Shawangunk Ridge and the Wallkill River valley, in a landscape of farms, wetlands and growing suburbs within commuting range of New York City.
Climate & water
- Climate Zones
- Humid continental climate with hot summers (Köppen Dfa); low basins such as the Black Dirt are frost-prone.
- Rainfall patterns
- Precipitation is spread evenly through the year with no dry season; late summer and early autumn are slightly wetter, often boosted by thunderstorms and the remnants of tropical storms. Winter precipitation falls as snow, sleet and rain, and spring snowmelt drives peak streamflow in March and April.
- Average Rainfall
- Approximately 1,150 to 1,250 mm per year.
- Temperature Extremes
- July highs typically reach 28 to 30°C, with heat waves above 32°C in most summers. January lows average around -8°C, with cold snaps below -18°C.
- Average Temperature
- About 10°C annually, from roughly -3°C in January to 23°C in July.
- Watershed
- Within the Hudson River watershed via the Wallkill River, which flows north to the Rondout and the Hudson at Kingston, and Moodna Creek, which enters the Hudson at Cornwall.
Land & terrain
- Elevation & slope
- Gently rolling lowland and low hills, mostly between roughly 50 and 200 metres above sea level.
- Landforms
- Glacial valleys and basins, including the peat-filled Black Dirt lake bed, between the Highlands gneiss ridges and the Shawangunk escarpment.
- Soil Types
- Silt loams and gravelly loams in glacial till and outwash over shale and limestone, with deep organic muck soils (Histosols) in the drained Black Dirt basin of the Wallkill valley.
- Renewable resource potential
- Solar on barn roofs and field margins; composting of manure and crop residue; soil carbon in pasture and cover-cropped fields.
People & history
- Land Acknowledgements
- Blooming Hill Farm lies within Lenapehoking, the homeland of the Lenape people, whose Munsee-speaking communities lived along Muhheakantuck, the river that flows both ways, and its tributaries. We acknowledge the Lenape and their descendants in the Delaware Nation, the Delaware Tribe of Indians and the Stockbridge-Munsee Community, whose relationship with this land continues.
